Cecil, a son of Ida and Thomas, grew up with two brothers, Raymond and Marion in Sagetown now Gladstone. In 1866, the Galbraith's could take the Eames Covered Bridge across Henderson Creek between Gladstone and Oquawka. In winter, the family could take a horse and buggy across the Mississippi River to Burlington, Iowa. Cecil completed eighth grade in a one room school. The Galbraith's hailed from Tennessee and Scotland. Cecil resided in Henderson County formerly Warren County.
Cecil served in the U.S. Army in World War I. As a young man, he liked to square dance. He played cards, usually a good game of pitch, with friends and family. People were always dropping by. Every summer his granddaughter came to visit. Cecil enjoyed family gatherings, looking for a good buy at auctions, shopping downtown Burlington on Saturdays while anticipating Lawrence Welk on TV, and picnicking along the river. His step grandson learned to drive the Ford tractor and helped out at the farm.
Cecil married Lilly A. Olsen on 24 Dec 1919. Lilly came from Denmark. They first lived with Ida and Thomas. Lilly had a large garden and canned for the winter. She made the clothes for her family. They raised two daughters, Maida and Pearl. Both girls completed high school in Moline, IL. Maida married Edwin F. Navratil and they had one daughter. Pearl married Robert V. Carey. Later, Cecil married Nora E. Booton Hicks. Nora and Cecil were married for 30 years residing in Stronghurst.
Cecil, like many men in his family, farmed. He had corn, soybeans, and hogs. He enjoyed reminiscing with fellow farmers about tractors on display at the Old Threshers during Burlington Steamboat Days and shopping at FarmKing. He and Nora began dinner before the midday whistle; Paul Harvey was on the radio. Cecil was an honest man; his handshake was as good as a signature. Cecil started farming by walking behind a handheld plow pulled by a team of horses. He lived to see man walk on the moon.
Cherish this memory, as you look back picture Cecil standing in his denim bib overalls, raising his long knobby walking stick that he made from a tree at the farm ... until we meet again.
